PLATFORM

I running for 3rd District City Council for Barstow to work for you. We must commit to and embrace our current situations, making public safety; fire, police, and housing and economic development a top priority, and improve our youth and senior services.   As the Chairman of the Resident Oversite Committee for Measure Q on the Barstow Community Advisor Board, I understand the complicated issues for the people of  Barstow and how to we can get things done.
LIST OF ISSUES
PUBLIC SAFETY

Fire Department

Continue to add equipment and personnel to the Fire Department allowing them to better do their jobs for the community. Continue the recruiting process so that Barstow can have the best and the brightest. Expand the Fire Department Explorer Program for young youth in the community. Encourage the Fire Department to get out and let the people of Barstow know how great it is to be a Barstow Fire Fighter, with greater displays and activities for the community.

Police Department

Continue to improve the Police Department with the latest tools and personnel that will increase public safety. Encourage the police to do greater community policing by reaching out to the community and talking directly to the people. Increase Police response time and hold everyone to the same standards which moves our city from the fifth most dangerous city in California, with this investment we have made within the last year.

Youth and Senior Services

I also work very closely with the Parks and Rec Superintendent on Youth Sports, youth services and senior services for continued and inclusive programs for the city. Parks and Rec has developed a senior health and wellness program, and also a youth teen center.

Housing and Economic Development

Housing and economic development works hand and hand. With the average income in Barstow at $39,000 a year, not many will be able to buy a home, which means we have to try and attract higher paying jobs to the area so people can afford to purchase a home; that can  happen through job training (education). To attract those who are willing to build new housing in the area, we must have higher paying jobs so people can afford these new homes, it is a vicious cycle.

So how do we do both:

One program I purpose is a Barstow Work Program, where the city along with private companies and the county come together to place young adults in Jobs where they can get the experience and joy you and I feel in our careers. So they can get a sense of what it’s like to work for the Fire Department, the Police Department, Public Work, Waste management, City Government, BNSF, possibly DOD. These young adults can possibly become department heads, program managers, or city leaders.

You may ask how do we pay for this, Measure Q I believe has enough room within it to make this happen if we work hard to achieve the goals we are looking for. This type of program will help lower our unemployment and poverty levels within the city and in turn increase the average income within the city.

Yes, we are going to always have low paying jobs, we love our Walmart and fast food places, but we now give these young adults an alternative if they choose to take it.
